The smell of pine needles, the sound of carols, the twinkle of lights… and the joy of a handmade stocking hanging by the fireplace! There’s nothing quite like it. If you’ve been crocheting for a little while and are ready to make something that truly feels like a holiday heirloom, a Christmas stocking is the perfect project.
Don't worry about complex shaping or tricky techniques! This pattern is designed with beginners in mind. We’ll use simple stitches, basic shaping, and a bit of seaming at the end. The result is a charming, classic stocking that you’ll be proud to display (or fill with goodies!) for years to come.
Let's make some magic!
We'll stick to the basics you know and love:
We will make the stocking in three parts: the leg (the long rectangle part), the heel, and the toe. Then we'll sew it all together!
Cuff: With your contrasting color (e.g., white), chain 11.
Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. (10 sc)
Rows 2-8: Chain 1, turn. Sc in each stitch across. (10 sc)
Switch to your main color (e.g., red). Do not cut the white yarn; you can just carry it up the side for now.
Continue working in rows of 10 sc until your rectangle measures about 12 inches long from the beginning edge. End with a long tail for sewing later.
We will now work directly onto the end of the rectangle we just made.
Find the center of the 10-stitch width. Place a stitch marker in the 5th stitch.
Fold the rectangle in half, bringing the two side edges together. The marked stitch will be at the bottom of the fold.
Joining the Heel: Using your yarn needle and the long tail, sew the two side edges together for about 3 inches, starting from the fold and working upwards. This creates the "cup" of the heel. Tie off and weave in the end.
Now we'll work in the round to close up the foot. We'll be working around the opening at the bottom of the leg.
Round 1: Attach your main color yarn to one corner of the opening. You will be crocheting around the entire U-shaped opening. Sc evenly around. You should have about 30-35 stitches. Don't worry about being exact! Just be consistent. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch to mark the beginning of the round.
Rounds 2-8: Sc in each stitch around, moving your marker up each round.
Shaping the Toe: Now we'll start decreasing to make the toe pointy.
Closing the Toe: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread it onto your yarn needle and weave it through the remaining loops. Pull tight to close the hole and secure with a knot.
How to single crochet two together (sc2tog): Insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (you'll have 3 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Weave in Ends: Go back and weave in any remaining loose ends, including the white yarn from the cuff.
Add a Hanger (Optional!): Cut a 12-inch piece of yarn. Attach it to the top corner of the cuff and tie it in a loop to create a hanger.
Decorate! (Optional!): This is where you can get creative! Add a few simple crocheted snowflakes, sew on a button, or use some fabric paint to add a name or the year.
And just like that, you've made a beautiful Christmas stocking! Hang it with pride, fill it with treats, and get ready for the compliments. You've officially leveled up your crochet skills and created a piece of holiday magic that will be treasured for years to come.
