There is something so incredibly special about making a gift for a baby. It’s more than just yarn and stitches; it’s a handmade hug, a wish for sweet dreams, and a keepsake that a family will cherish forever.
If you're a beginner looking to make your first baby blanket, the thought can be a little daunting. But don't you worry! We're going to create a blanket that is not only beautiful and modern but is also made with the simplest of stitches.
This pattern uses only two stitches: the chain and the half double crochet. The result is a wonderfully soft, slightly stretchy fabric with a lovely texture that looks way more impressive than it is to make. Let's create something cozy, shall we?
How to Half Double Crochet (hdc):
Yarn over your hook once.
Insert your hook into the stitch.
Yarn over and pull up a loop (you'll have 3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. That's it!
This blanket is made by working in rows back and forth. We'll start with a foundation chain and then just keep crocheting until it's a beautiful square.
Step 1: The Foundation Chain
Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
Chain 90 stitches. This will give you a blanket that is about 30 inches wide, a perfect size for a stroller or a cuddly lap blanket.
Chain 2 more stitches. This is your "turning chain" for a half double crochet.
Step 2: The First Row of Half Double Crochet
You're going to work your first hdc into the third chain from your hook. (Don't count the loop on your hook. Skip the first 2 chains, and put your hook into the next one.)
Make a half double crochet (hdc) in that stitch.
Continue to make one hdc in every single chain across the row. You should have 89 stitches.
At the end of the row, chain 2 and turn your work.
Step 3: The Easy Part (Repeat, Repeat, Repeat!)
For the rest of the blanket, you will simply do the following:
That's it! Just hdc, chain 2, turn. hdc, chain 2, turn. Get comfy, put on your favorite show, and find your rhythm. Your blanket will grow before your eyes.
Step 4: Finishing Your Blanket
Continue crocheting until your blanket is as long as it is wide, forming a square (around 30 inches).
Once you finish your last row, do not chain 2. Instead, cut your yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.
Pull the tail through the last loop on your hook to secure it.
Thread your yarn needle and weave in all your loose ends carefully on the back of the blanket. This is important for a baby gift, so take your time!
And there you have it. A soft, cozy, and beautiful baby blanket, made entirely by you. Wrap it up and give it with pride. You didn't just give a blanket; you gave your time, your care, and a little piece of your heart.
Congratulations on making such a wonderful gift!
